Carolyn Mae Burkey, of Philomath, Oregon, peacefully went to be with Jesus, on February 9, 2019 in her home. She was born to Melvin and Emily Mishler on October 18, 1934, in the town of Sheridan, Oregon. She grew up along with her older brother Robert and younger brother Stan in the Sheridan Mennonite church. Carolyn accepted Jesus at an early age. In her youth she enjoyed playing softball, riding horses, and working in her parent’s grocery store.
In 1952, Carolyn graduated from Western Mennonite High. She attended Hesston College one semester—long enough to be known as the ladies ping pong champion. She then returned to Portland to begin her training as an X-ray technician.
Soon after returning home, Carolyn and her former high school friend, Al Burkey, reconnected. They were married a year later on August 28, 1954, in Sheridan, Oregon. Their family moved around Oregon as her husband pursued opportunities in education. In 1974 Carolyn embraced the role of pastor’s wife. Her door was always open, her table always full, her hands were always ready as she served with a contagious smile. She enjoyed visiting family in their mission endeavors in Mexico and the Dominican Republic, but there was nothing that made her happier than to know her children and grandchildren were walking in the truth.
Carolyn was a loving and supportive daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and friend. Everyone who knew her could see that her love for Jesus was real. Her life mirrored what she believed. It was her joy to reach out to the broken and hurting people around her. Even in recent years as she struggled with dementia, she continued to bless her caregivers and family with her sweet spirit and smile.
Carolyn was proceeded in death by her parents Mel and Emily Mishler. She is survived by her husband, Alfred Burkey, and her children, Gregg (and Debbie) Burkey , Anita Stephenson, Jan Burkey, and Angie (and Tim) Wenger, plus her eighteen grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, her brothers, Robert (and Nellie) Mishler and Stan (and Ellen) Mishler, and many nieces and nephews.
We are all grateful for the way she touched our lives.
