Rollie was born near Condon, OR, to Ralph and Gladys (Bither) Bilyeu. He graduated from Maupin HS in 1950, and started at Oregon State College a year later. At OSC he studied business, was a member of Chi Phi fraternity, and active in ROTC. Most importantly, he met and married fellow OSC student and Home Economics major, the lovely Laverne Key. They were married for 64 years.

Graduating as a 2nd Lieutenant, Rollie and Laverne moved to Ft. Belvoir, VA and Ft. Lewis, WA as he served 6 months active duty. He continued with the Army Reserves for the next 30+ years, ending his military service as a full Colonel.

Rollie started his professional life working at First National Bank in Portland, OR. He then worked in the food brokerage business, and in 1973, moved his family to Albany, OR to take a job with Oregon Freeze Dry. Later he started his own general contracting business; however, Rollie’s favorite job was his last one, working for the Oregon State Fire Marshal as an inspector for key lock gas pumps around the state. Rollie loved to drive, visit new places, and talk with people, and this job paid him to do all of those things!

Rollie had his private pilot’s license for a number of years and belonged to the Albany Flying Club. He was a lifelong “Beaver Believer” and faithfully rooted for OSU football regardless of their record. Rollie also volunteered for the Oregon State Police, was an active member of his church, enjoyed a good debate and giving his opinion, but most of all, loved his family.

Rollie is survived by his wife, Laverne; daughters Janine of Alexandria, VA and Lisa of Kent, WA; son Ron and wife Carol of Jefferson, OR; 5 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Robert, and sister Ardith.

A memorial service with military honors will be held on Saturday, February 10th at 11am at First Christian Church, Albany, OR.
