Gary Lee Torgeson
August 31, 1934---September 19, 2017

Gary L. Torgeson, 83, of Albany died Tuesday at Samaritan Evergreen Hospice House. Born in Albany to Alva and Beulah (Crocker) Torgeson, Gary was raised in Albany and met Marveen “Kaye” Atlee at Albany high school where he graduated in 1952. They married on May 1st, 1955 and moved to San Francisco where Gary was stationed in the Army at the Presidio. Gary was also stationed at Enewetak during the testing of the hydrogen bomb.

After the service, Gary played professional baseball in the Cleveland Indians organization. Upon his return to the Valley Gary attended OSU. He started working in the meat business at age 16. He and Kaye purchased Bruce Custom Slaughtering in 1963 where they worked until retirement. Gary and Kaye were world travelers, seeing almost every country in the world. Gary was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved doing both with his family and friends. He looked forward to every season. He was a member of the Albany Elks, Eagles, and the NRA.

Gary was a firm believer in family first. Later in his life he enjoyed woodworking in his shop. Gary was blessed to have had many years teaching his grandkids to hunt and fish and to have a great appreciation for family and the outdoors. He adored his great granddaughter Chloe (AKA Pistol) who brought him great joy and had Gary wrapped around her little finger.

Gary is survived by his wife of 62 years Kaye of Albany; son Montie L. and his wife Wendy of Albany; brother Montie B. and his wife Delores of Albany; grandchildren Joel Torgeson of Albany, and Ashley Torgeson Fuller and her husband Troy of Albany; great grandchildren Chloe Caroline Fuller of Albany, and Oscar and Sophia Fuller of Alaska; niece Michele Torgeson Kumpula; and nephew Dustin Torgeson.

At Gary’s request no services are planned, but a celebration of his life will be announced after hunting season. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Samaritan Evergreen Hospice House in care of Fisher Funeral Home, 306 SW Washington St., Albany, OR 97321.
