Memorial for John Hightower

Born in Salem, OR on Sep. 30, 1951
Departed on Jun. 15, 2017 and resided in Albany, OR.

John Lynn Dennis Hightower, 65, passed away on June 15, 2017 at his home, in Albany, Oregon. He was born on September 30, 1951 in Salem, Oregon. He was a longtime resident of Newport, Oregon, but recently moved to Albany prior to his passing.

John grew up in Marion, Oregon. He graduated from Cascade Union High School in Turner, Oregon in 1969. After high school, he worked in marketing and retail sales at several major building supply outlets until he owned and operated in partnership the Salem Appliance Center in Salem, Oregon for 6 years. John met in 1986 and married his wife, Marcia Garlinghouse Hightower on February 25, 1989. They moved to the Oregon Coast where John was Store Manager for Doug's Electric and then Platt Electric in Newport. In 1997, John and Marcia opened and operated the well-known business Surface Rescue all along the Oregon Coast for 17 years when they both retired in 2014 and moved to Albany. John and Marcia had a collaborative and caring relationship. It was based on mutual support and a deep love for each other.

John was a gifted guitar player and an Eagles fan, and he played and enjoyed most all music. His other hobbies included anything that took him outdoors like boating, fishing, hiking, and even yard work. He had a passion for everything cars. There was never a project too big or small that he wouldn't take on. John was never one to dwell on life's setbacks and his positive personality endeared him to all.

John was preceded in death by his parents by adoption, Ella Mae Wright Hightower and James Hightower, and sister, Joyce Ruth. He is survived by his brothers; Rick Dennis of Las Vegas, Melvin Dennis of Vancouver, WA; and Wesley Dennis of Lafayette, OR; and his sister, Gloria Hiratsuka of Anchorage, Alaska.
John is lovingly remembered by his spouse, Marcia Garlinghouse Hightower of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; Daughters Sheri Fugate (Shelby) of Atoka, Oklahoma; Robin Talbert (Ardie) of Turner, Oregon and son Jonathan Hightower of Turner, Oregon; Stepsons Erich Knudson (Wendy) of Waldport, Oregon and Matt Knudson of San Francisco, California.

John's grandchildren: Ashley Fugate-Bingham; Josh Fugate; Shelby Fugate; Kiera Hightower and Aliesa Campbell and His great grandchildren Isaiah Clayton Hightower; Joshua and Adalee Fugate will all miss his presence in their world.

All of his family and friends are so very proud of John because of his generous and thoughtful ways and because he exemplified the concept that the best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others. John had a very kind heart, quick wit, amazing memory and was a skilled and creative DIY person. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. It was John's wish that there not be a funeral, but hoped that those who wish to reminisce and celebrate his life and accomplishments do so in their own way. He leaves you with a line from the Eagles song, "Ol' 55. "Just a wishin' I'd stayed a little longer." And to all he knew and loved, the Eagles song, "It's Your World Now."
