Memorial for Ralph "Roger" Hawthorne

Born in Portland, Oregon on Oct. 23, 1944
Departed on May 25, 2017 and resided in Albany, OR.

Roger passed away suddenly on Thursday, May 25, 2017 at Samaritan Albany General Hospital. He was born in Portland to Ralph and Margaret Hawthorne. At age five, they moved to Fresno, California, until 1957 when they came to Albany.

At age 16 Roger set up his "Albany Aquariums" business, raising and selling tropical fish out of the basement of his parents home.

Roger graduated from Albany Union High School in 1962 and spent two years at Oregon State University.

Roger had different locations for his tropical fish business and that was his passion for the rest of his life. He was instrumental in supplying zebra fish for study of stem cell research. He was always ready to talk with anyone about setting up an aquarium and gave all he knew about how to set up the tank and take care of the fish, so others would be as happy with their fish as he was. He went logging with his children and taught them about falling trees and splitting, stacking and selling the wood for profit.

Roger also had a large passion for plants, old ghost towns, steam trains, animals, Nascar and could be seen almost every Saturday during the season at Willamette Speedway in Lebanon. Any vacation was filled with large doses of his passions.

He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Albany, where he was a deacon. Roger was married to Kathy on May 29, 1965 and they were preparing for their 52nd wedding anniversary.

Roger is survived by his wife Kathy;son Jason; daughter Tonya and husband Tony Kihlstadius of Albany;brother Tim and wife Mary Anne of Arizona; sister Peggy and husband Jeff Babcock of Arizona;and three grandchildren; Jason, Phebe and Danika.

A celebration of life will be at 11 a.m. on July 29th at the United Presbyterian Church in Albany.
